Glossary of Terms
Anodising An aluminium surface finishing process that chemically and electrically alters the surface finish of Aluminium. Generally produced in silver or bronze and offers excellent surface protection
Awning Window A sash that pushes out from the bottom with friction stays mounted on the sides or butt hinges mounted on the top
Bay Window A window that protrudes from the side of a house that usually has 3 facets with the side facets lying at a 45' angle to the building
Bi fold Door or Window A door or window where the panels slide and fold against each other to create a wide opening
Box Section An extrusion which, in cross section, has a portion which is completely enclosed. This adds strength and rigidity to an extrusion
Box Window A window that protrudes from the side of a house with sides that are at right angles to the main window pane
Casement Window A sash that opens from the side with friction stays mounted at the Windowtop and bottom or butt hinges mounted on the side
Double Hung Window A window where 2 sashes slide vertically past each other
Extrusion A length of aluminium formed to a desired shape by the passing of an Aluminium billet, under pressure through a shaped orifice (die)
Fabricators The people who actually produce the finished aluminium joinery products
Faceted Window A window with a number of facets with siliconed, glass to glass joints
Fixed Light A non opening window or pane
French Doors Paired doors one of which closes against the other, usually opening outwards on to a deck or patio
Greenhouse Window A window that has the same shape as a box window but does not extend up to the eaves and has a sloping glass roof
Jamb The vertical side members of a window or door frame
Jambliners (also knows as a 'reveal') The internal facing between the window or door and wall lining
Mullion Any vertical member that appears within the frame of a window or door
Powdercoating An aluminium surface finishing process that applies a paint finish to aluminium in the form of a powder which is then baked onto the product. This option allows a large range of colours
Prime Die Holder Designers and distributors of aluminium extrusions
Rail A horizontal member of a sash or glazed door
Raked Window A window with one or more of its sides sloping
Sash That part of a window that opens
Shugg Window A vertical sliding window with two panes of glass which slide past each other in one action
Sidelight A glazed panel attached to the side of a hinged door, sometimes incorporating an opening sash
Stacker Doors A sliding door where two panels both slide behind a third fixed panel to create a two thirds opening
Stile A vertical side member of a sash or glazed door
Test Booth

A large testing structure which allows the installation of actual size joinery for deflection, water and air leakage tests. This is carried out to recreate typical and extreme weather conditions. This can be carried out to NZ or Australian standards requirements.

Transom The horizontal member that appears within the frame of a window or door
Vision Rail The horizontal member that appears approximately half way up a glazed door
